Arsenal transfer news: Confirmation of Olivier Giroud signing and Nicklas Bendtner exit signal big changes
Arsenal are set to make big changes to their forward line with the completion of Olivier Giroud’s transfer today and Nicklas Bendtner’s likely move away to follow.
The Gunners announced the signing of the France international this morning and revealed he had completed a medical and contract terms on Monday before being unveiled.
Giroud will add a more physical presence to the attacking line-up at Emirates Stadium and Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said as much when commenting on the deal.
“We are delighted to have secured the signing of Olivier Giroud. He has a very good physical presence and is exceptional in the air, with a great work ethic,” he told the club’s official website.
“We are excited about Olivier joining us and he will add an additional dimension to our attacking options next season.”
Meanwhile, Giroud cited the presence of Wenger and the way in which he runs the north London club as a prominent factor in his decision.
“I was attracted by the philosophy of football and Arsène Wenger’s 'touch' at this club,” said the 25-year-old.
“I have always admired Arsenal with its great history and reputation, and I now hope to achieve great things here.
“I’m very proud to be a Gunner and I will give my best for all the Arsenal fans.”
In a case of opposing fortunes, out-of-favour striker Nicklas Bendtner is close to a move away from the club, according to his agent.
The tall Danish forward scored twice at Euro 2012 and his performances have apparently attracted interest from clubs around the world.
“We are getting closer day by day. The interest is overwhelming, just as it should be after the way Nicklas performed at Euro 2012,” Jesper Lynghus told bold.dk.
“We are not commenting on individual deals at the moment, but it is fair to say the interest in Nicklas is global.”
The 24-year-old spent last season on-loan at Sunderland after growing impatient with a lack of opportunities in his preferred role as central striker and having to play in wide positions.
